The Cruel Prince

Author: Holly Black

Read: April 2018

This is the first book that I read by Holly Black. And I loved it! The sequel, The Wicked King, is one of my most anticipated releases for 2019.

I absolutely love fantasy more than any other genre. So I can’t deny a book about a mortal girl living in a world of fairies and magic! This book follows Jude, who is taken to the High Court of Faerie, along with her twin sister, Taryn, and their older sister, Vivi. That happens when they’re children, but the book takes place when their teenagers.

Jude quickly became one of my favorite characters. She’s strong and bold and intelligent, but also angry and often reckless. She’s (very) rough around the edges, but she loves her sisters and tries to protect Taryn from Prince Cardan and his friends. Cardan, the youngest prince, is a complete asshole without really any redeeming qualities. He bullies the twins because they’re human and all his friends enjoy doing it as well.

I bite the inside of my cheek. Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever. Valerian’s hair shines like polished gold. Nicasia’s limbs are long and perfectly shaped, her mouth the pink of coral, her hair the color of the deepest, coldest part of the sea. Fox-eyed Locke, standing silently behind Valerian, his expression schooled to careful indifference, has a chin as pointed as the tips of his ears. And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest, with black hair as iridescent as a raven’s wing and cheekbones sharp enough to cut out a girl’s heart. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

The Cruel Prince, p. 30

It starts out as a simple story like this, living in this faerie land and going through the motions. But it quickly becomes more serious when Jude gets tangled up in a scheme to make sure one of the princes ends up on the throne. Because she’s human, she has the ability to lie. Faeries can not do that and so she’s recruited by one of the princes to help him get the crown. Things, of course, get out of hand and Jude has to find a way to come out of all this alive.

I loved this story. I loved the characters and the world and the twists! Oh my goodness! So. Many. Twists. Holly Black has me hooked man. I was so upset that this was a stand-alone novel, but when I found out the sequel was coming out I was so excited! I need more of this world. Especially after that ending! I need more Jude and Cardan and their complicated relationship. I need to know what happened after the prince became the king! I need it all! And I definitely can not wait for January 2019 to read the sequel!!
