Saga, Vol. 1

Author: Brian K. Vaughan

Artist: Fiona Staples

Read: December 2017

This was my first graphic novel in years (besides Nimona). The last graphic novel series I read was when I was in middle school; nearly ten years ago to be precise. (Great. Now I feel old.) I loved that series so I was open to reading more. I had heard so many good things about this series. I don’t know who hasn’t heard about this. There is so much hype for these graphic novels.

I actually really enjoyed it. Lately my experience with hyped books hasn’t been the best but I gave Saga a try and I’m glad I did. First of all, the art is amazing. It speaks to me. I am in love with it; I fell in love with it when I first flipped through the book. It definitely leaves an impression and I definitely need to look into more of their work.

The actual story is super interesting too. There’s this war going on and the two main characters don’t want any part in it and are running away but everyone seems to be coming after them. They got married before the book starts and they are having a baby in the first chapter. The interesting thing is that the narrator is actually the child. The baby is telling the story of its parents and their journey for a sort of safe haven. They go to all these different places and meet some interesting people. I’m really loving the series so far.

But the banter though. I love the wit and the humor in this novel. I was laughing throughout the entire thing. I was a little uncomfortable with the more “graphic” images because I wasn’t expecting it but it’s not something that took away from the story. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re not a fan of foul language and adult images/scenes. I’m not really a fan of it either but it’s a good story so I can overlook it since its for a more mature audience anyways. (I just wasn’t aware of that going into it.)

I really did enjoy reading this novel. I recently bought the second volume and I hope to pick it up soon. The only reason I haven’t read it already is because I wont be going to the bookstore anytime soon and I don’t want to have to wait too long to read the next volume. I love the cover art on both volumes so far. Like I said, the art is just amazing! So happy that I finally read this one and that it lived up to the hype!
